“During the early sixties I paid a visit to El Sayed El Badawy, Tanta, known for its annual “mouled” celebrations. I spent the day drawing every nook and cranny of the place, eventually deciding to buy a popular mouled bride doll which was made of plastic, a fairly new material at the time. As I went back to the studio in Alexandria with my newly found possession, I found myself instinctively placing the upper half of the doll on a birdcage where my grandad kept his canaries. To finish the piece I stuck a knife in the box, touching the head of the doll. I dubbed this work “The Assassination of innocence”, at this point in time where there was nobody else in Egypt practicing this sort of artwork. This experience has paved the way for an even greater variety of work with an even more electric range of materials. Although the language for this kind of work was yet to exist in this context, I produced many kinds of assemblage and 3D work. Using the findings I acquired from all across Egypt, whether that be the Friday markets or my frequent visits to upper Egypt, Siwa or Sinai, I scoured for materials wherever I went. I carried on playing with shape and formation, creating with it my work that combined sculpture, architecture, drawing, colouring and carpentry.” –Esmat Dawestashy, 2020
Reflecting on his accomplishments, it is an opportune time to revisit an intense collaboration that took place in the nineties with the renowned artist Esmat Dawestashy, in celebration of the impact and role he has had in shaping the Egyptian Contemporary Art movement. In this exhibition the focus will be on the three dimensional works, as he is a pioneer in the exploration of material. Primarily known for his assemblage and his poetic use of objects and symbols, he addresses the environment and trivialities that constrain and encourage artistic activities. The profound nature of his work has no doubt contributed greatly to the influences of the artistic generations ensuing him.

إنه الوقت المناسب لإلقاء الضوء على أواصر فنية توطدت في تسعينات القرن الماضي مع الفنان الشهير عصمت داوستاشي، احتفاءً بالتأثير والدور المحوري الذي لعبه في تشكيل حركة الفن المصري المعاصر. سينصب التركيز في هذا المعرض القادم على الأعمال ثلاثية الأبعاد ، فهو رائداً في استكشاف الخامات المتجانسة. اشتهر في المقام الأول بتجميعه واستخدامه الشعري للأشياء والرموز ، وهو يعالج البيئة والتفاهات التي تقيد الأنشطة الفنية والتي تشجعها أيضاً، لا شك أن الطبيعة العميقة لعمله الدؤوب أثرت بشكل كبير في الأجيال الفنية التي تلته.
