Mashrabia Gallery of Contemporary Art is hiring for the following position: Programme and Gallery Coordinator. We welcome passionate and creative candidates with a strong interest in contemporary art, good knowledge of art history and arts management, who are willing to coordinate the Gallery’s activities.
About the Gallery
Located in Downtown Cairo, Mashrabia Gallery of Contemporary Art established itself since the early 1990s as one of the pillars of contemporary art in Egypt. With the mission of discovering and promoting new artistic talent and of supporting both well-known and emerging artists, the gallery has played a pioneering role in the diffusion of contemporary art across Egypt and abroad. In parallel to its monthly exhibitions, the gallery curates projects at other institutions, historical sites and public spaces across the country, in a quest to make visual art accessible to a vaster audience. Among these initiatives are Noubar (NOmad Urban Breaking Art, 2005–2006), El Azhar Park Meets Contemporary Arts (2005, 2006), Invisible Presence (Looking at the Body in Contemporary Egyptian Art, 2009–2010) and the From Rags to Riches project (www.projectfrtr.com). Moreover, Mashrabia Gallery has participated in several International Art Fairs such as Bologna Arte Fiera (2015), 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair London (2016, 2018, 2019), Beirut Art Fair (2016, 2017, 2018).
Job Summary:
The Programme and Gallery Coordinator of Mashrabia Gallery of Contemporary Art works closely with the Director and Curator of Mashrabia Gallery of Contemporary Art and is responsible for coordinating and actively supporting the work of the team in preparing and delivering all aspects of the gallery’s programme, including exhibitions, art fairs, art talks, and special events. Another key programmatic focus of the Programme and Gallery Coordinator’s role is to identify opportunities to support and amplify local artists both locally and internationally, to propose creative and effective strategies to engage audiences and attract new visitors, as well as to enhance networking with art collectors and artists. In liaison with the gallery’s artistic policy and taste, he/she contributes to the curatorial strategy. He/she is expected to have good knowledge and strong understanding of the local artistic scene, as well as to have a consistent background in the arts.

Main responsibilities:
- Assist with the day-to-day management and administration of the Gallery and coordinate Gallery’s activities and programme
- Welcome the public to the exhibition on display at the Gallery and answer any queries people may have about the exhibition/event /Gallery
- Communicate thoughtfully in written and verbal form with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, members of the public, and more
- Answer the telephone, take messages, deal with visitor enquiries
- Write press releases, statements, biographies
- Administrate delivery of the talks programme, including liaison with speakers and managing technical set up
- Manage the monthly event including liaising with casual events staff
- Develop ideas to extend reach to attract new audiences and retain existing ones
- Identify and develop opportunities and network for joint ventures with other cultural, industry establishments, like galleries, museums, art fairs, etc.
- Responsible for daily social media posting and content research
- Responsible for mail-outs of newsletters, exhibitions and events
- Responsible for managing mailing lists
- Responsible for updating the website content
- Attend exhibition openings and coordinate team during events, as needed
- Represent the gallery at external meetings, seminars, conferences as required
- Lead occasional exhibition tours to the visiting public
- Contribute to accurate the documentation of events
- Support the strategy for and supervise sales of work
- Prepare the gallery’s works of art for shipping, storage, conservation, and documentation and deal with all couriers and deliveries to and from the Gallery
- Ensure all equipment and lighting is fully functional at the beginning of every day
- Make sure the Galleries are clean and tidy at the beginning and end of the day
- Open and close the Gallery as required and ensure total security compliance at all times
- Make sure that visitors respect internal regulations
Required skills and qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Art History, Fine Arts, Art Curating, Business or related fields
- A minimum of one year of relevant professional experience in a responsible role in a related cultural field
- Strong interest in contemporary culture and art from the Arab world
- Knowledgeable in art history and arts management and fundamental knowledge of marketing concepts
- Management skills to dispatch tasks to the gallery’s staff, train interns and volunteer, plan schedules, set deadlines, etc.
- Computer literacy, including wordprocessing, spreadsheets, Microsoft Office, databases, and keyboard skills
- Photoshop/Illustrator/In Design or Premier knowledge
- Excellency in oral and written English
- Excellent communications skills and understanding of different social media
platforms - Experience in dealing with the public
- Good team worker & detail oriented
- Multi-tasking and flexibility
Desirable:
- Fluency in oral and written Arabic strongly preferred
- Knowledge of a third language
- Experience of applying for and raising funds for cultural projects
- Experience of developing strategies for the sale of contemporary art
- Experience of working with archives and archival material
