Bahgoury is one of Egypt’s most renowned contemporary artists.
"This captivating exhibition would like to pay homage to the ingenious artist and his career. Drawing being an integral part of who he is, Bahgoury throughout his life couldn’t detain himself from drawing -- like a magnificent obsession -- his everyday surroundings, whether it was a beautiful scenery or at his everyday cafe," the gallery wrote.
The exhibition is divided into sections ranging from portraits to nudes to street scenes. "It stresses the ability of Bahgoury to create a whole world through a mere simple black line. Colours add to the compositions a touch of sensuality, recalling the freedom of expression which has characterised his entire production."
The gallery will be open between 5pm and 10pm "to avoid crowding." The gallery also reminds the viewers to wear face masks when visiting and to take all the precautionary measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
Born in Luxor in 1932, Bahgoury began work as a political cartoonist in 1953, then went on to study at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Zamalek in 1955 under the guidance of Egyptian artist Hussein Bikar. In 1970, he continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris.
Throughout the many decades of his career, he has been mostly influenced by the expressionist and cubist schools. Among his many thematic choices, Egyptian folk art remains a dominant characteristic.
His caricatures are featured frequently in Al-Ahram Weekly.
His works have been exhibited in museums and galleries all over the world, including the Louvre in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in Amman, and the Museum of Modern Art in Cairo.
