It is within these lines by Baudelaire that the Essam’s work finds its origin and strength. Their paradoxes and strangeness resonate deeply with the hidden forces of the artist’s imagination. They speak of contradiction, duality, and the eternal tension between submission and rebellion themes that pulse through the Essam’s canvases.
In these paintings, the rhythm and musicality of Baudelaire’s words are transposed into color and form. Scattered fragments of life are reassembled into unusual, dreamlike worlds where characters embody conflicting worldviews: they dissolve and reappear, oppose and embrace, wound and heal.
Through this interplay of harmony and rupture, the exhibition The Knife and the Apple explores the fragile balance between freedom and constraining the space where creative energy is both born and tested. It is within this space that the artist reveals the poetry of conflict, and the beauty that emerges from contradiction.
About the Artist: Essam Alaa is a young artist who lives and works between Cairo and France, dividing his time between the vibrant district of Bulaq Dakror, Maadi where he has been painting for more than ten years, and France where he regularly exhibits. He develops a figurative, free, and poetic style. His first exhibition in 2019 in Maadi was a great success, particularly with the French community, followed in 2021 by an exhibition at Mashrabia Gallery. Inspired by Khalil Gibran, he presented a notable project at Mashrabia in 2023. In 2024 and 2025, he took part in group exhibitions at the Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo and in Cape Town, and also presented his work in France during the summer. His practice is constantly evolving, blending cultural memory and personal reflection, and in 2020 he founded an artistic initiative to support young talents. His paintings explore human emotion with vivid sincerity and poetic depth.

في هذه السطور لبودلير تجد أعمال عصام أصلها وقوتها. تتردد مفارقتها وغرابتها بعمق في القوى الخفية لخيال الفنان. تتحدث عن التناقض والازدواجية والتوتر الأبدي بين الخضوع والتمرد وهي مواضيع تنبض في لوحات عصام.
في هذه اللوحات، يتم تحويل إيقاع وموسيقى كلمات بودلير إلى لون وشكل. تُعاد تجميع شظايا الحياة المتناثرة في عوالم غير عادية تشبه الأحلام، حيث تجسد الشخصيات رؤى متضاربة للعالم: فهي تتلاشى وتظهر من جديد، وتتعارض وتتصالح، وتجرح وتشفي.
من خلال هذا التفاعل بين الانسجام والانقسام، تستكشف معرض ”السكين والتفاحة“ التوازن الهش بين الحرية والقيود، وهو الفضاء الذي تولد فيه الطاقة الإبداعية وتُختبر. في هذا الفضاء، يكشف الفنان عن شاعرية الصراع والجمال الذي ينبثق من التناقض.
عن الفنان: عصام علاء فنان شاب يعيش ويعمل بين القاهرة وفرنسا، حيث يقسّم وقته بين حي بولاق الدكرور، والمعادي حيث يرسم منذ أكثر من عشر سنوات، وفرنسا حيث يعرض أعماله بانتظام. يطور أسلوباً تصويرياً حراً وشاعرياً. أقام أول معرض له عام 2019 في المعادي وحقق نجاحاً كبيراً، خاصة لدى الجالية الفرنسية، تلاه معرض في جاليري مشربية عام 2021. مستلهماً من جبران خليل جبران، قدّم مشروعاً لافتاً في مشربية عام 2023. في عام 2024 و2025 شارك في معارض جماعية بالمتحف المصري الكبير في القاهرة ومدينة كيب تاون، كما عرض أعماله في فرنسا خلال الصيف. يتطور عمله باستمرار، جامعاً بين الذاكرة الثقافية والتأمل الشخصي، وقد أسس عام 2020 مبادرة فنية لدعم المواهب الشابة. لوحاته تستكشف المشاعر الإنسانية بصدق حيّ وعمق شعري.
